Week 7 -Monday

We were very excited that a class member had an experiment to show us that she conducted. The students all guessed what they think was going to happen and why.

The explanation for the experiment is below as well as some photos showing the bubbles that appeared.

First of all, we confirmed what we already knew ... oil and water do not mix. The molecules of water do not like to mix with the molecules of oil. Even if you try to shake up the bottle, the oil breaks up into small little drops, but the oil doesn't mix with the water. Also, food colouring only mixes with water. It does not colour the oil. When you pour the water into the bottle with the oil, the water sinks to the bottom and the oil floats to the top. This is the same as when the oil from a ship spills in the ocean. The oil floats on top of the water. Oil floats on the surface because water is heavier than oil. Sicentists say that water is more dense than the oil. Here's the surprising part..The berocca tablet reacts with the water to make tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. These bubbles attach themselves to the blobs of coloured water and cause them to float to the surface. When the bubbles pop, the colour blobs sink back to the bottom of the bottle. Now that's a burst of colour? Your own homemade lava lamp... Very groovy!!!

Naidoc Day Celebrations.

4Z had such a fantastic day during our whole school Naidoc Day activities. The students were involved in numerous art and craft activities and were lucky enough to see a performance that celebrated the Aboriginal Culture. The students got to hear the Digeridoo being played and had their faces painted.

Week 5

What a great Monday to start week 5. We are learning all about Natural Disasters and are investigating how Volcanoes erupt and what happens when it does. In order to have a better understanding of this we conducted the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment this morning.

The students did a fantastic job at predicting what would happen and how this gave us an understanding of the inner workings of a real Volcano. Well done to Indi who was brave enough to drop the mentos into the Diet Coke Bottle after Ella took the lid off. Have a look at the eruption that eventuated below. Ask your children why it happened? What is the science behind it?

Ancient Egypt Day (Week 10)

Wow what a fantastic day we have had and a great way to end the very busy term on such a fantastic note. We were so excited to join in all of the wonderful activities organised by the Stage 2 teachers for this wonderful day that was celebrating the cultural history of Ancient Egypt. We have learnt so much and immersed ourselves in Ancient Egypt for the entire term as part of our HSIE unit.

The costumes that some of the students made, put together or sourced have been fantastic and look absolutely wonderful. Well done to everyone on a great effort and show of enthusiasm.

We have some great photos below.

Holiday News Update

Mrs Zanapalis has some very exciting news about our Silkworm Silky. She finally came out of her cocoon last night. I believe she is a girl moth as her abdomen is bloated and she is not fluttering her wings too much. These are two common traits of a female moth.

Take a look below at how beautiful she is. Let me know on our Blog page what you think about her. I look forward to reading your comments 4Z.

Week 9 News

We are happy to announce that our silkworm has been named Silky. After many suggestions such as Massive, Hunter, BFG, Bob, Trevor, Freddie and Buddy Silky was the winning name selected by 4Z students.

Have a look at what has happened to our Silky now. He/She is slowly transforming and is at the Pupa stage of a silkworms life cycle. Silky is no longer eating any Mulberry leaves and is happily in its silk cocoon.

Stay tuned for what happens next.

Harmony Day - 18th March

We had such a great day today talking about Harmony, discussing why we celebrate Harmony Day, what it means to us and finding out more about each other through our class survey. The students questioning and conversations that came from other people's stories of Harmony that they heard and the cultural diversity that exists in Australia and our own classroom were wonderful. We were busy creating some Harmony Day art as well. Have a look at some of our photos below.

We have been very excited to find that over the weekend our Mini Beast has grown so much.

Have a look at how big it is below. 4Z students are currently having a class competition to name our Silkworm. Stay tuned for the Silkworm's name to be posted soon. We have been monitoring its growth each day and taking special note of how it is slowly transforming. Hayden thinks that it is going to be spinning its cocoon any day now. Ella and Sasha have been busy helping to get it new leaves to eat each day, while Emily has enjoyed spraying out Scorpion Leaf insects with water.
